Bangkok has two international airports — Suvarnabhumi (สุวรรณภูมิ) and Don Mueang (ดอนเมือง) — and the right transport option depends entirely on which one you land at, what time you arrive, and how much luggage you're carrying. The fastest options at both airports are their respective rail links, which completely bypass Bangkok's notoriously congested road traffic.

Getting from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) to the City

Suvarnabhumi Airport
Suvarnabhumi is Bangkok's main international hub, located roughly 35 kilometres east of downtown. The majority of long-haul international flights arrive here.

Airport Rail Link — Fastest Option

Airport Rail Link Bangkok
The Airport Rail Link (แอร์พอร์ต เรล ลิงก์) departs from the Basement level (B Floor) and takes 25–30 minutes to reach the city, regardless of traffic. There are two key stops: Makkasan Station, which connects to the MRT Blue Line, and the terminus at Phaya Thai Station, which connects to the BTS Skytrain.

Since November 2025, the ARL accepts contactless Visa or Mastercard tap-and-go directly at the turnstiles across all eight stations — no token or separate transit card needed. Just tap in at the Suvarnabhumi basement and tap out at your destination.

Detail Info
Departure floor Basement (B Floor)
Journey time 25–30 minutes
Cost THB 35–45
Key stops Makkasan (MRT Blue Line), Phaya Thai (BTS)
Payment Contactless Visa/Mastercard, or single-journey token
Operating hours 06:00–midnight

From Makkasan, you can connect directly to the MRT Blue Line. As of June 2026, the MRT Blue and Purple Lines have fully transitioned to EMV contactless payments — tap in with a Visa, Mastercard, or UnionPay card. Old stored-value MRT cards are no longer accepted, so if you have one from a previous trip, claim any remaining balance before travel. Note that the Rabbit Card does not work on the MRT Blue Line.

Once you reach Phaya Thai, you'll be on the BTS Skytrain network. BTS lines are still undergoing gradual EMV integration in 2026, so picking up a Rabbit Card remains the most convenient option for getting around the city on the Skytrain.

Taxi, Grab, or Bolt — Best for Groups or Heavy Luggage

Bangkok Grab
Head to Level 1, Gates 4–6 and take a numbered lane ticket from the automated queue machine. For Grab or Bolt, proceed to the designated ride-hailing pickup zone on the same level. Fares are metered, plus a mandatory THB 50 airport surcharge and around THB 70–100 in expressway tolls paid separately at each toll booth.

Detail Info
Pickup location Level 1, Gates 4–6
Journey time 35–60 min (traffic-dependent)
Estimated cost THB 300–500 total

Journey time varies significantly with Bangkok traffic. Rush hour (07:30–09:30 and 17:00–20:00) can push travel time past 90 minutes.

Airport Bus S1 — Best for Khao San Road on a Budget

Bus S1 runs directly from Level 1, Gate 7 to Khao San Road (ถนนข้าวสาร) and Sanam Luang for a flat THB 60. It's the cheapest option from BKK and a natural fit if you're heading to Khao San Road and the Rattanakosin old city area. Departures run approximately every 30 minutes, though traffic can push the actual journey to 50–90+ minutes — budget more time than you think you need.

Getting from Don Mueang Airport (DMK) to the City

Don Mueang handles most budget airline routes — AirAsia, Lion Air, Nok Air, and similar carriers. It sits roughly 30 kilometres north of downtown.

SRT Red Line Train — Best for Skipping Traffic

The SRT Red Line station is accessible directly from the end of Terminal 2 via a connecting walkway to Don Mueang Station (สถานีดอนเมือง). Trains run south to Krungthep Apiwat Central Terminal (กรุงเทพอภิวัฒน์), where you can transfer to the MRT Blue Line for onward travel into central districts. The train journey itself takes only 17–20 minutes.

Taxi, Grab, or Bolt — Best Door-to-Door

How to Transfer Between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang

If you're transiting between the two airports, there are three options ranging from free to fast.

The free airport shuttle is the standout choice for most travellers. It departs from Level 2, Gate 3 (inner curb) at Suvarnabhumi every 30 minutes between 05:00 and midnight. This service is exclusively for passengers transferring between the two airports — you'll need to present a boarding pass or flight confirmation plus a passport or national ID card. It is not available to the general public.

Route 554 is a useful budget alternative if you don't qualify for the free shuttle. It departs from Level 1, Gate 7 at Suvarnabhumi and runs to Don Mueang and onward to Rangsit for THB 35 flat, operating 05:00–21:45.

Method Time Cost
Free airport shuttle 50–90 min Free (boarding pass or flight confirmation + passport/ID required)
Route 554 Bus 60–90 min THB 35 (departs Level 1, Gate 7 · 05:00–21:45)
Grab / Taxi 30–60 min ~THB 150–250

Which Neighbourhood Are You Heading To?

Where you stay in Bangkok affects which transport option makes the most sense. The BTS Skytrain's Sukhumvit and Silom lines cover the modern city — making the ARL from Suvarnabhumi or the SRT Red Line from Don Mueang especially practical for those areas. For the old city around the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, Bus S1 or A4 direct to Khao San Road is often the simplest overland option.
